How fast does the earth move?

Wednesday, March 19, 2008

Hey,
Recently I have been curious about how fast our planet is flying through space and so I wikipedied it and I think the results will amaze you. The earth rotates on its axis at 1,040 miles per hour (incredible!) and completes a full rotation every 24 hours. And the earth revolves (orbits) around the sun at 67,000 miles per hour (absolutely unbelievable!) and completes a full orbit of the sun every 365.2564 days.

Source: Earth Wikipedia Article

So I believe that there are two things we can take away from this.
  1. If your life ever seems slow and uninteresting you can always remember that no matter what you are doing you are always going somewhere fast. Really fast, (67,000 mph fast to be exact).
  2. That every time you celebrate your birthday what you are really celebrating is another trip around sun.

You make me spacey,
-Mike

Interesting. Wikipedia is such a great tool for questions such as these. Good seeing you at church the other night. Hope you had a great birthday. We should hit up an Angels game this year
Oh yeah, you would probably find this interesting. DJ, Klement, Mark Lohman, and myself are taking a road trip during spring break. Do you have any "road trip advice" that you can pass on to rookies like myself?
Wow, that means that every year I travel 587,332,291.2 miles! I wonder what my insurance would be like if I put THAT on my AAA.
Crazy numbers for sure. I have to confess that my favorite part of this post, however, was the picture. I want moving pictures on my blog!

The Matrix Has You (with only stationary pictures)
Rymac, I'd love to hit an angels game this year. Let me know when you want to go.

Rymac, I do have some advice. I'm not sure where you guys have decided to go but I highly recommend the Redwood forest north of SF or going to the Grand Canyon, and the national parks in Southern Utah (they are absolutely amazing!).

As for gas I think it is easiest just to switch off each person paying for gas taking turns, so that each person has to pay for gas every forth time you are at a gas station.

If you can try to camp on the weekends because hotels fill up and are more expensive on the weekends. Hotels are cheaper Sunday-Thursday.

Other advice about hotels is that I would recommend using the Hotel Coupon books that can be found at McDonald's and gas stations because those are the cheapest rates. There is also a link here if you want to print them up.

Other than that I encourage you to be dangerous but not foolish. Scream into the wind and just have a good time.

Rauta, its amazing isn't it. I don't think your insurance would be very happy with you. I probably put 15,000-20,000 miles on my car each year as it is.

AJ, for you and others here is a link to many more animations that can be uploaded to there blogs. I might do a top ten favorite animations some day.

Haha, uh, I'm not sure if you knew this already, but I am in fact Raelynn. I don't think anyone has actually addressed me as Rauta before :P
This blog makes me dizzy.
