Wisdom or Information? - John Ortberg Quote

Wednesday, February 20, 2008

When John Ortberg is talking about the difference between gaining wisdom  or gaining information in his book The Life You've Always Wanted he says

...today we have traded wisdom for information, we have exchanged depth for breadth. We want to microwave maturity.

He goes onto cite Abraham Lincoln's biographer to the affect that even though Lincoln was a slow reader he gained much wisdom because he did read slow and was able to think about what he was reading. Today we have access to virtually unlimited amounts of information at the click of a Google search, but the question is, "what good is information if it doesn't become life changing (or at the very least thought-provoking)?".

Just a thought,
-Mike

P.S. I will try to start posting more often, as time allows, hopefully at least once-a-week.

Very train. It's so true. I've been reading/studying in Proverbs lately, and it makes much of gaining wisdom, discernment, insight, knowledge, instruction, etc.--all of which require information but also much more. As you said, all you need for information is a Google search; but "the fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge" (1:7).

I hope you start posting more often. I'm hoping the same for myself...
