a journey into the heart of america

Have you ever felt called to something? Have you ever felt something so deeply and passionately that sometimes it was hard to sleep at night because you were thinking about it?

Recently I have felt like I have been called to do something. I know, I know it sounds tripped out, but I really feel like God has put a deep desire within me to go explore from sea to shinning sea to meet Americans everywhere and just go live the adventure for a little while. I could be wrong about this, but for me this has been burning desire inside of me since my roommate AJ, and my friend Courtney Patino and I agreed to take the trip while eating some taquitos late one Wednesday night at my apartment.

For me this is the trip:

A Journey into the Heart of America

So the plan is that next summer we will take 2 to 3 months off to explore the four corners of America. We will be graduated from college and not ready to enter to real world yet so we will take off and escape to a distant land (our homeland).

Why Roadtrip Across America?:

For Freedom's Sake
Our goal on this trip is not to find out who we are supposed to be but rather who we were meant to be. This trip will allow us to get away from being ourselves and really live free to ask important questions without getting canned answers. And so we believe that as we explore the open road we will also explore our hearts and minds to consider, why we exist, and what difference does it make. And hopefully we might be able to find out something about what we are supposed to do with out lives. But if not at the very least we will have an amazing adventure!

For the Sake of Time
Time is not like money. Money you can take and save for another day but our time will be spent whether we like it or not (e.g. we can not take this minute and put it into the bank to save for another day). So if we don't spend our time wisely now, we may never be able have an opportunity to do this again.

For the Good of America
We want to Go. We want to Touch. And we want to Bless the awkward people (like ourselves) who call themselves American. We want to meet and greet these Americans of all different shapes and sizes and tell them they are meant for more than just Wal-Mart and Wendys. We want to take a journey into the hearts of Americans everywhere and learn about who they are.

How do You Roadtrip Across America?:

The Personnel
All the literature that I read on road trips suggests that having the right road trip crew is important so, so far we have 4 all-star candidates that have committed to going on the trip (2 girls and 2 guys, including myself). And if you would like to join the cast please let me know and or you can fill out the Road Trip Preferences Compatibility Quiz and send it to me via email. We are probably looking for anywhere from 2 to 4 more people of with preferably the same guy to girl ratio. Also check out the trip tab at the top of moreburritos.com for tons of Road Trip Resources.

Some Logistics
Other things that would be a big help for us: we are in need of places to crash for a night in different places all across America. So if you have Uncle who owns a farm in Middleofnowhere, Montana and wouldn’t mind a few scruffy, yet friendly college students staying a night, please let me know as that would be a big help. Also we are looking for some solid transportation like a big Van or something like that, if you happen to have one of those that you don’t use that you wouldn’t mind letting us borrow for the summer, please let me know.

Tips and Help
Also if you have ever taken a roadtrip like this any advice or help that you could give me would be extremely helpful because while I have traveled all over the world I have never done this type of trip across the USA before. Thanks!

Lets trip out together,

AJ was telling me about this, but he didn't go into any detail . . . sounds really cool. Unfortunately, I have no aid to lend (since all of my relatives with empty beds are also AJ's, so . . . yeah, and I have no car), but I'll keep the preparations and (when it happens) the trip itself in my prayers.

Incidentally . . . was the "I know this sounds tripped out" pun intentional or no?
I've desired to do something like this for a long time--to hit the open road and see where it takes me. Praise be to God for bringing others into my life with such passion for adventure! I've got a heart for other nations, that is true. But while away, I had a greater urge to know my own country. This is truly a beautiful land. I like that you call Americans awkward. Perfect word choice.

Just reading this blog moves me to wax poetic.
Mike, I'm going to call you. right now.

does that mean that rae wants to come on our trip? sweet. i love the way you describe it. getting pumped from out here in the heart of CO. feeling good about being back 9 or ten months with a community of rock stars. I love my life.
oh, and i'm pretty sure that WE decided that AJ was going on the trip. i really don't think he had any choice in the matter... his 'agreeing' is kind of like saying he chose his destiny. i mean i'm glad he did, just thought i'd clarify.
Oh yes, Rae most certainly wants to go. Please be in prayer about my ability to go though, I have to do some major money making, life planning, parent convincing to go... but for some reason when I think of the trip I feel that I am going 100%, even though I'll be defying the greatest of odds... my parents.

Courtney:
I think you're right. In fact, my "agreeing" to go on the trip was kinda like saying I accepted Christ, even though God chose me to be elect from before the foundations of the world. ;)

There goes that crazy Calvinist again,
AJ
<><
AJ,
I totally almost used the same example to illuminate my point, but didn't because I was afraid it would read as flippant and sacrilgious...but you pulled it off, nice job. Anyway, I'm glad to see that at the heart of the matter (and, as Mike would say, the matter of the heart) we are on the same page about your acceptance of the proposals of both salvation and road-tripping. Keep on rocking, csuf rock star.

This is an amazing, if you will, "advertisement" for your trip. You touch on the three key components of the trip, God (almost a given), Yourself/selves (yes, another requirement), but also all of the other Americans that you will meet. The potential of impact on this nation from this trip is truly momentous. I shall keep you all in my prayers.

"May the Lord bless you and keep you, may he make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious unto you, the Lord lift up his countenance on you and give you peace." -Numbers 6:24-26

More and more pumped all the time. Yay.
it's so fun because i've been telling people about how i'm finishing up school and preparing to leave for a roadtrip next fall and they ask, "oh, where are you going?" and so i tell them "america."
